SU Environmental Studies Students Win 'Make-A-Heron' Art Contest

SALISBURY, MD---“Stash Your Trash” has a new mascot.

“Scuttle,” by Salisbury University environmental studies majors Catie Burkowske of Lusby, MD, and Kathleen McMillen of Princeton Junction, NJ, recently won a “Make-A-Heron” art contest to create the mascot for the City of Salisbury and Wicomico County anti-litter campaign.

Participants were challenged to make herons, featured in the campaign’s logo, from recyclable and found objects. Visitors to the Salisbury Arts and Entertainment District’s November 3rd Friday downtown celebration, where the entries were displayed, were encouraged to vote on their favorite to determine the winner. Over 300 cast ballots.

“Scuttle”’s feathers were cut from cardboard boxes. Its beak is a CFL light bulb, with plastic strips for its tail and a base decorated with flowers made from plastic bottles. The heron’s frame was made from pieces of chain link fence, welded and covered with chicken wire.

While “Scuttle” will serve as the official mascot, other entries will not be recycled just yet. They will be displayed in public spaces throughout the county to help promote “Stash Your Trash.”

Sponsored by the Environmental Studies Department, and Chesapeake Tours and Promotions, Inc., the contest was funded by the Wicomico Partnership for Families and Children, and the Maryland Governor’s Office for Children, Youth and Families, with in-kind support from Rommel’s Ace Hardware and the Wicomico County Recycling Center.
