SU Hosts Art:21 Film Series Beginning September 20

SALISBURY, MD---Contemporary art breaks out of the confines of museums and art galleries and onto the campus of Salisbury University this fall, with screenings of the PBS series Art: 21–Art in the Twenty-First Century.

Shattering the myth of the artist as an isolated genius, season two of Art: 21 is shown 6-8 p.m. on selected Thursdays in Fulton Hall 111.

A unique series focusing exclusively on contemporary art, it provides an experience far beyond a gallery visit.  Intimate footage depicts some 16 American artists at work, including Charles Atlas, Martin Puryear and Raymond Pettibon, among others.  Transforming inspiration into art, they voice their thoughts while grappling with the physical and visual challenges of achieving artistic visions.  Films are:

• September 20: Stories and Contemporary Art – Filmmaker John Waters explores how the art of today records and describes the world. 

• October 18: Loss, Desire & Contemporary Art – Actress Jane Alexander explores how artists express longing, love and the human experience.  

• November 8:  Time & Contemporary Art – Dance pioneer Merce Cunningham explores the relationship to ancient art, to nature and to the rhythms of life.

• December 6:  Humor and Contemporary Art – Comedian Margaret Cho explores irony, satire and sarcasm, and art that is funny and critical at the same time.
