SU Hosts Environmental Film Series Thursdays During March
SALISBURY, MD---Energy use and climate change are global concerns with far-reaching consequences that affect the daily lives of Eastern Shore residents.
Salisbury University and several regional environmental groups explore such issues and their local impact through Energy Use, Climate Change and Delmarva, the 2007 Energy Film Festival and Spring Lecture Series. SU hosts the series 7 – 9 p.m. Thursdays during March in Henson Hall, Room 103.
“Rising sea levels and the resulting severity of storm flooding are major issues for Delmarva,” said Dr. Judith Stribling, biology professor at SU and president of Friends of the Nanticoke River. “Energy consumption and energy sources are also important economically and are of great interest to the public, especially in connection with global warming and rising sea levels. We hope to both enlighten and entertain with humor, intelligent discussion and vital information about these issues.”
Featuring productions from the Sierra Club’s Energy Film Festival, the films and discussions with local experts are designed to provide a forum for information sharing among community leaders and the public. Topics in the series include:
• March 1 – Personal Face of Climate Change
Film: Rising Waters – Shares climate change stories from Pacific Islanders
Speaker: Dr. Bill Boicourt, University of Maryland, Horn Point.
• March 8 – Funny Folk on Serious Stuff
Film: Earth to America – Examines global warming with Tom Hanks, Steve Martin, Robin Williams, Ben Stiller, Robert Kennedy Jr. and others
• March 15 – Thinkers and Leaders
Film: Nobelity –Discusses world’s pressing issues with Nobel Laureates
Film: Sundance Summit – Celebrates gathering on climate protection
Speakers: Local elected leaders from Maryland and Delaware.
• March 22 – Alternative Energy Sources.
Film: French Fries to Go – Looks at Colorado’s bio-diesel project
Film: The Vineyard Energy Project – Discusses solar power for energy
Film: Wind over Water – Highlights offshore wind farming.
Speaker: Dr. Willett Kempton, University of Delaware
• March 29 – What YOU Can Do
Film: Kilowatt Ours – Explores energy solutions from West Virginia’s coal mines to Florida’s solar power fields
Speaker: Glen Besa, regional director of the Sierra Club
The series is co-sponsored by the Chesapeake Bay Foundation’s Heart of the Chesapeake Project, Friends of the Nanticoke River, Nanticoke Watershed Alliance, Sierra Club (Delaware Chapter) and Wicomico Environmental Trust.
