SU Hosts 'Ghosts of Rwanda' Screening June 27
SALISBURY, MD---In 1994, when the United Nations sent peacekeepers to the small central African nation of Rwanda, most of the policymakers involved believed it would be a straightforward mission that would help restore the U.N.’s reputation after failures in Bosnia and Somalia.
They did not anticipate the horror of a genocide of nearly 1 million people.
The Holocaust Educators Network at Salisbury University hosts a screening of the PBS Frontline documentary Ghosts of Rwanda 7 p.m. Monday, June 27, in Fulton Hall Room 111. A discussion facilitated by Dr. Diana Wagner, co-director of the Maryland Holocaust Educators Network, follows.
The two-hour film was produced on the 10th anniversary of the tragedy in 2004. For the documentary, producers interviewed government officials, diplomats, soldiers and survivors who provided first-hand accounts of the state-sponsored genocide through which some 800,000 Rwandans were methodically hunted down and murdered by Hutu extremists.
Sponsored by the Memorial Library of New York, Maryland Holocaust Educators Network, and Samuel W. and Marilyn Seidel School of Education and Professional Studies, admission is free and the public is invited.
