SU Hosts 'Songs of the Chesapeake' Thursday, September 11

SALISBURY, MD---For 30 years prior to his death in 2010, Teresa Whitaker and Frank Schwartz collaborated with folk singer and storyteller Tom Wisner, hailed by The Washington Post as the “Bard of the Chesapeake.”

Today, striving to keep those musical traditions alive, the duo performs “Songs of the Chesapeake” 6:30 p.m. Thursday, September 11, on Salisbury University’s Sea Gull Square Lawn (rain location: Guerrieri University Center Gull's Nest). Tom Horton, award-winning Chesapeake Bay author and faculty in SU’s Environmental Studies Department, hosts the event.

A native of Kentucky, Whitaker tells original stories and traditional myths and folktales, weaving in participatory music with songs, guitar, Celtic harp and percussion instruments. A musician and songwriter from Baltimore, Schwartz plays guitar, bass, banjo and mandolin, and sings.

The pair has released several albums, most recently Finding Home. Songs on the CD extol the wonders of nature, from the melodic sounds of waterfowl (“Geese Come Down”) to the importance of clean waterways (“Maryland Blue Crab Blues”).
