SU Math and Computer Science Club Hosts GullCode Challenge

SALISBURY, MD---Even though it was a Saturday, some 50 computer science students were hard at work inside Salisbury University’s Henson Science Hall.

They were competing for cash and prizes during the campus’ third GullCode computer programming challenge.

Each team received a set of problems to solve using either JAVA or C++ computer programming languages, which require logical or mathematical algorithms. They had four hours to complete the most problems correctly.

Members of the winning team were (pictured below, from left) Charlie Sun of Salisbury; Rachel Hollis of Silver Spring, MD; and Lucas Turpin of Millsboro, DE. They each earned $100 Visa gift cards. The second place team included Ryan Dillon of Eldersburg, MD; Richard Quackenbush of Pittsville, MD; and Klaus Sexton of Huntingtown, MD. They each earned $50 Visa gift cards. Third place went to Ryan Mulligan, also of Huntingtown; Zach Johnson of Ellicott City, MD; and Tyler Chenoweth of Hampstead, MD. They each earned two Regal Cinema 16 Movie passes.

“This was our largest challenge yet,” said SU junior Charles Rusk, who co-organized it with senior Rob Close for the University’s Math and Computer Science Club.

Door prizes were donated by local businesses and the University’s STEM program. Participants also received t-shirts and items from NASA.

The event was sponsored by the Richard A. Henson School of Science and Technology and the Mathematics and Computer Science Department.
