SU Represented at Joint Mathematics Meetings

SALISBURY, MD---Salisbury University was again well-represented at the recent national Joint Mathematics Meetings. The joint meetings are co-hosted by the Mathematical Association of America and the American Mathematical Society each January and feature sessions sponsored by these and other mathematics-related organizations.

This year 10 faculty from Salisbury’s Department of Mathematics and Computer Science attended and presented at the meetings in San Diego, CA. “Although they all attended numerous other sessions, one could have been kept quite busy at the four-day conference just attending sessions where SU faculty were presenting,” said Dr. Kathleen Shannon, chair of the Department of mathematics and Computer Science.

Drs. Homer Austin and Harel Barzilai presented “Math ADEPT: A Teacher Enhancement Program for Inservice Middle School Mathematics Teachers,” served on a panel on “Mathematical Preparation and Support of Teachers Through Rural Universities” and presented “Preservice Teachers Understanding of Mathematical Logic.” Dr. Kurt Ludwick presented a talk and a poster titled “Congruence Restricted Modular Forms.” Don Spickler presented “Teaching the Art of Conjecture Using Computers and the Web.” Dr. Robert Tardiff and recent SU graduate Leann Karl presented “An Object Oriented Approach for Studying Queuing Models.” Dr. Michael Bardzell presented “Establishing a Long-Term Undergraduate Research Program in Mathematics.” Dr. Mohammad Moazzam spoke on “Who created the decimal fractions for the first time in the world.” Dr. E. Lee May gave a paper titled “O for April, or, Are Batting Slumps Inevitable?” Dr. Steve Hetzler presented “Introduction to Mathematical Modeling.” And Shannon and Bardzell presented a poster: “The PascGalois Project: Visualizing Abstract Algebra.” Also in attendance was SU graduate Gaemus Collins, a Ph.D. candidate at University of California at Santa Barbara, who used this opportunity to visit with some of his former professors.
