Salisbury Chorale Celebrates Mozart Anniversary April 11

SALISBURY, MD---Some 36 Salisbury community members join four faculty and staff from Salisbury University as the Salisbury Chorale celebrates the 250th anniversary of Mozart’s birth during its annual spring concert 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 11, in Holloway Hall Auditorium.

Conducted by Dr. William M. Folger, director of choral activities at SU, selections include Mozart’s Vesperae Solennes de Confessore, KV 339, along with Johann Sebastian Bach’s Cantata BWV 4 Christ Iag in Todesbanden.

“Each movement is a musical setting of the vesper psalms read or sung by clergy as part of the Office,” said Folger. “Solo quartets, some operatic in gesture, flow out of the tutti ensemble choruses. Strings, brass and timpani accompany both the Mozart and the Johann Sebastian Bach cantata.

“Bach's cantata for Easter is based on a Martin Luther hymn tune setting, depicting the struggle of life and death through Christ's Passion and resurrection on Easter.”

Soloists are sopranos Amy Demps, Elisabeth Walker, Iris Stuart, Debra Clark and Gwen Skeens; altos Lynda Hinton and Joana Weaver; tenors Edgar Isaacs and James Calvin Robinson; and bass John Allen.

An orchestra comprised of members of the Salisbury Symphony Orchestra at SU accompanies the chorale. Susan Zimmer is rehearsal pianist and organist. Bank of America and Sea Gull Century sponsor the concert with the Department of Music. A $5 donation is requested at the door.
