Salisbury Symphony Orchestra Presents 'Out of Africa' Concert October 22

SALISBURY, MD---The Salisbury Symphony Orchestra at Salisbury University inaugurates its 31st season with the concert “Out of Africa: Saharan Echoes” 7:30 p.m. Saturday, October 22, in Holloway Hall Auditorium.

Directed by Dr. Jeffrey Schoyen, the performance features guest pianist Nathan Buckner. He joins the orchestra on Saint-Saëns’ Piano Concert No. 5, “The Egyptian.” Other works in the concert include Still’s Afro-American Symphony; Akpabot’s Three Nigerian Dances and Coleridge-Taylor’s “The Bamboula.”

A professor of piano at the University of Nebraska – Kearney, Buckner has played in recital at Alice Tully Hall in Lincoln Center and Merkin Concert Hall, also in Manhattan, and the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. He has appeared throughout the U.S., Europe and Asia, including recital performances in Taiwan, Mexico, Korea, China, Hong Kong, Belarus and Slovenia.

His musical knowledge goes well beyond the stage. Buckner’s editions of the piano works of 19th-century American composer Philip Antony Corri have been published by Kallisti Music Press of Philadelphia and reviewed in Notes: Journal of the Music Library Association. His article on the composer appears in the New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians.
