Salisbury Symphony Orchestra at SU Opens 30th Season With 'Viva Viola' October 17
SALISBURY, MD---The Salisbury Symphony Orchestra at Salisbury University opens its 30th season with the concert “Viva Viola!” featuring violist Rita Porfiris on Saturday, October 17.
Directed by Dr. Jeffrey Schoyen, the orchestra performs at 7:30 p.m. in Holloway Hall Auditorium. Selections include Williams’ Suite for Viola and Chamber Orchestra, Grainger’s “Molly on the Shore” and “Shepherd’s Hey”; Herbert’s “Irish Rhapsody”; Purcell’s “Music from Abdelazer”; and Bruch’s “Romance for Viola and Orchestra,” op. 85.
Bridging the gap between popular culture and classical music, Porfiris has performed with ensembles including the Orquesta Filarmonica de la Cuidade de Mexico and heard on National Public Radio, PBS and the BBC. She has presented master classes and performances throughout the United States, Europe, and South and Central Americas.
Porfiris is the associate professor of viola and director of chamber music at the University of Hartford’s (CT) Hartt School of Music, Dance and Theatre. She also is a member of the Miller-Porfiris Dio and the Hartt Quartet.
