Scherr Family Endows Scholarship for Special Education
SALISBURY, MD---Salisbury University students who are interested in teaching special education soon will benefit from a new scholarship established with a $10,000 gift from the Scherr family.
The Dr. and Mrs. Robert Scherr Endowment Fund will provide support for students who enroll in a special education track/minor, who take courses in preparation for special education licensing, or who already have passed national certification exams.
“It is important for me as a community member to enable a student to further his/her education, especially in the field of special education,” said Dr. Scherr, a licensed Speech-Language Pathologist in Salisbury. “My philosophy about education can be summed up in the following slogan: ‘Learning + Communication = Success.’ This motto is applicable to regular and special needs students.”
Scherr scholarship recipients also must have financial need and a minimum 3.0 G.P.A. Special consideration is given to those focusing on communication and/or learning disabilities.
Scherr said he also chose to support students in SU’s Samuel W. and Marilyn C. Seidel School of Education and Professional Studies because he “knew the Seidel family and their commitment to education.”
“They were exceptional role models in philanthropy,” he added.
Jason Curtin, vice president of advancement and external affairs and executive director of the SU Foundation, Inc., said: “We greatly appreciate the generosity of the Scherr family and others who continue traditions of giving at the University. They are helping to provide much-needed scholarships for our students.”
