ShoreCorps/PALS Volunteers at Eastern Shore Spring Games
Thursday April 15, 2004
SALISBURY, MD---ShoreCorps/PALS (Partnership for Adolescents on the Lower Shore), an AmeriCorps Program at Salisbury University, provides volunteers for the second annual Eastern Shore Spring Games co-sponsored by the Holly Community Inc. and Maryland Special Olympics on Saturday, May 8, at the Wicomico County Athletic Field at Wicomico High School. The mission of Special Olympics is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for citizens with mental retardation. This affords participants continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in sharing gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community. ShoreCorps/PALS has been a part of SU for the past nine years, providing outreach to thousands of youth and adolescents on the Eastern Shore. A vast majority of our ShoreCorps/PALS members are students from Salisbury University. Many of our members are residents of Salisbury and surrounding areas. They are students, many work part-time in the community and volunteer to do community service. ShoreCorps/PALS’ mission is to serve at-risk youth and adolescents through after- and in-school programs. Members provide mentoring and tutoring, conflict resolution training, parent and family support services, and community outreach to improve youth grades and life skills, reduce conflict and increase volunteerism. For more information and volunteer opportunities during the Spring Games call the Holly Community Inc. at 443-260-0822.
