Simmons Presents FEMA Media Relations Course"
SALISBURY, MD--Dr. Haven Simmons of the Communication Arts Department at Salisbury University recently presented a five-day course on media relations to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). The course, which includes supervising government public information officers from around the nation and anchoring newscast, is based on emergency mock scenarios in terrorism, natural disasters and hazardous materials. Communities from Louisiana, South Carolina, California, Washington and Arizona participated in the course.
Prior to joining Salisbury’s communication arts faculty in 1997, Simmons worked for 15 years as a newspaper reporter, television reporter and government spokesman. He earned his M.A. in journalism and Ph.D. in mass communications from the University of Iowa.
