Spring Adventures in Ideas Series Culminates with 'Lysistrata' Sunday, March 6

SALISBURY, MD---Seeking an end to the Peloponnesian Wars that devastated ancient Greece, an Athenian woman makes a startling proposal to her countrywomen, demanding they deny their husbands “the pleasures of the marriage bed” until the men cease their battle.

Things don’t go exactly as planned.

Such is the plot of Lysistrata, one of Aristophanes’ most famous and ribald comedies, performed by Salisbury University’s Bobbi Biron Theatre Program February 25-27 and March 3-6. But sometimes just watching the performance is not enough.

SU’s spring Adventures in Ideas humanities seminar series culminates with an exploration of ancient Greece and a backstage look at the production from 12:30-5 p.m. Sunday, March 6, in Fulton Hall Room 111.

Dr. Ray Thompson of the History Department begins the seminar with a presentation on ancient Greece, followed by a matinee performance of Lysistrata. Afterward, Dr. T. Paul Pfeiffer, director of the play, leads the cast and designers in a discussion of the production.

Sponsored by the Charles R. and Martha N. Fulton School of Liberal Arts and the Whaley Family Foundation, admission to the seminar is $30, which includes coffee, snacks, lunch and admission to the performance. Advance registration is required. This seminar and the play are recommended for mature audiences due to strong sexual content.
