Star Choreographer Speaks at SU September 29

SALISBURY, MD---Not everyone may know Fatima Robinson’s name, but they probably have seen her work in such movies as Save the Last Dance and Romeo Must Die, commercials for Coca-Cola and videos from artists including Michael Jackson, Backstreet Boys, Santana and No Doubt.

Robinson is the choreographer behind some of today’s most visual pop images, including Mary J. Blige’s 2002 video Family Affair and recent TV commercials for the Gap. She brings her expertise to Salisbury University with a lecture and media presentation 8 p.m. Monday, September 29, in Holloway Hall Auditorium.

Named one of Entertainment Weekly’s “100 Most Creative People in Entertainment,” Robinson has received six MTV Video Music Award nominations for her work with Mary J. Blige, Aaliyah, Will Smith, Busta Rhymes, Dr. Dre and Brandy. She was a back-to-back winner of the Music Video Producer’s Association Award for Best Choreography in 1997 for her hip-hop tango in Dr. Dre’s Been There, Done That and in 1998 for her work on Busta Rhymes’ Put Your Hands Where My Eyes Can See.

She was recently nominated for a Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Choreographer for her own work on Radiant Baby, a musical based on the life of artist Keith Haring at the New York Public Theatre.

In addition to choreographing and performing, Robinson has expanded into directing. Her recent music video directorial work includes Shaggy’s Dance and Shout, Cole’s I Can Do Too, Kandi’s Cheatin’ On Me, Valeria’s Ohh La La and CeCe Winans’ More Than What I Wanted. She is also preparing to direct a hip-hop dance documentary for the Fox SearchLab production company.
