Student Research Conference

SALISBURY, MD-- The second annual Salisbury University Student Research Conference (SUSRC) on Friday, April 12, features projects as diverse as music and theatrical performances, fine arts and graphic art displays, workshops and poetry readings, in addition to traditional presentation panels and poster sessions.

Dr. Robert Provine, assistant director of the Neuroscience Program and laughter researcher at the University of Maryland Baltimore County, is the plenary speaker. His most recent book, Laughter: A Scientific Investigation, was listed by the New York Public Library as one of the "25 Books to Remember from 2000."

The so-called "Laughter Guy" has had articles published in the New York Times, The Washington Post, Psychology Today, The Wall Street Journal, Discover, The Daily Telegraph (London), Panorama (Italy) and Focus (Germany). He has appeared on "ABC World News Tonight," "20/20," the Discover Channel, the Learning Channel, and "All Things Considered" and "Morning Edition" on National

Public Radio. A professor of psychology at UMBC, Provine's talk is at 4 p.m. in Holloway Hall Auditorium.

The SUSRC is a chance for students to share their work with the campus community. Students select their favorite project, discuss it with a faculty sponsor, and complete an online submission form to the conference committee.

The submissions are organized into different sessions based on common themes. For example, one session might feature research projects from biology students, another from economics and another might highlight the best speeches from public speaking students or music majors discussing the difficulties in creating original compositions.

The conference sessions are designated at specific time periods beginning at 1 p.m. in Caruthers, Fulton and Holloway halls and the Guerrieri University Center. The campus community, parents of students and the general public are invited to attend.
