White Addresses Wicomico Speech Pathologists"  

SALISBURY, MD---Dr. I. Eugene White, assistant professor of psychology at Salisbury State University and a licensed clinical professional counselor at Peninsula Mental Health Services, recently addressed the speech pathologists of the Wicomico County School System.

His presentation, which took place at Fruitland Primary School, reviewed the diagnosis etiology and treatment of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder. Epidemiological studies indicate that only 1-7 percent of children develop ADHD; that it is diagnosed in boys about three times more often than girls; symptoms often persist from childhood into adolescence and adulthood in about two-thirds of the cases; and is found across most cultures and ethnic groups.

White, who focused on the multimodal approach of successful treatment of the child with this disorder, said the most efficacious therapy is a combination of medication and behavior therapy that involves the entire family. He said research suggests that early intervention that treats the aggression and defiance in the child and the effecting handling of those problems by the parents appears to lead to the most positive long-term outcome for the child.
