Wood Carver Martha Griffin to have show at Atrium Gallery

SALISBURY, MD --- The Atrium Gallery in Guerrieri University Center at Salisbury University showcases the work of figurative wood sculptor Martha Griffin, Friday, February 28 --  Friday, April 11.

An opening reception will be held Friday, February 28, 5 - 7 p.m. The Atrium Gallery is open Tuesday -- Friday, 10 a.m. - 4 p.m.

Griffin has worked with many media but today concentrates on wood. She starts with a small sketch, which she then doubles in size. In the carving process she integrates the human form with the form she finds within the grain and structure of the wood. Griffin said she is "happiest blending human form with the grain, color and texture of wood."

This show features her most recent work, a relief series sculpted from 3- to 4- inch slabs of mahogany as well as a series of color reduction linoleum block prints from her sketches of the woodcarvings.

Griffin is a Philadelphia native who moved to New York City to study drawing at the Art Students League and sculpture at the National Academy School of Fine Arts. She currently resides in Seaford, DE, where she has a sculpture and printmaking studio.

"Martha Griffin: Expressions of Human Nature"  is sponsored by the Office of Cultural Affairs and Museum Program and is partially funded by a grant from the Maryland State Arts Council. There is no admission to either the exhibit or opening reception and the public is cordially invited.
