SSU Dance Company Performance Set forNov. 10, 12 & 13

SALISBURY, MD--A variety of dance styles--modern, jazz, lyrical and tap--will be highlighted when the Salisbury State University Dance Company presents its 10th annual Dance Showcase--a program of student created works on Wednesday, November 10, Friday, November 12, and Saturday, November 13, at 8 p.m. in SSU's Holloway Hall Auditorium.

"The company is the strongest it has ever been this year, and I am so proud and honored to be carrying on the work of Dr. Victoria Hutchinson during her sabbatical," said Temporary Artistic Director Mariah Malec, most recently of Phoenix, AZ. "We have nine solid dances on the program that all have impressive and emotional versatility, and the performers' commitment to these works is unparalleled in my experience."

Katie Ferguson, a sophomore at SSU, presents a dance

fusion of jazz and hip hop. The piece, "Ready to Go," is set for 10 dancers.

Senior marketing major Caren J. Franchetti presents her newest work set to the music by DJ FM. "Identity" utilizes the talents of 10 dancers and expresses the importance of maintaining one's identity while entering corporate America.

Melissa Jordan, a sophomore elementary education major with a dance major, presents a jazz/chair dance for eight dancers, "Free Your Mind". Set to the music of En Vogue, the dance tells of the prejudice in today's society.

"Working Girls" explores the everyday frustrations of surviving life in an everyday job situation. The question is this: "At what point do we stop working to live and start living to work? And what does this process ultimately do to us?"

Senior art/graphic design major and dance minor Kimberly A. Moore presents a modern dance work, "Man Over Board." The dance is set to music by Far.

Stephanie Schultz, a biology major with chemistry and psychology minors, presents her original work, "Release." Through a combination of jazz and tap, eight dancers express the idea that it is possible to break through the restraints that hold us back from being ourselves.

Wyclef Jean's rappin' BeeGee's remake of "We Trying to Stay Alive" sets the stage for the first number in "Bruised, Thoughtful, and Thankful" by True Sojouner and dancers. The "Bruised" section is a blend of clogging, boxing and hip-hop. The "Thoughtful" movement interlude takes consolation from Wyton Marsalis' work, "The Sedductress." Vickie Winas is the vocalist for a gospel celebration ending.

Senior marine biology and environmental majors Jamie Vernacchio presents a tap work for nine dancers. Set to the music of Benny Goodman, "Sing, Sing, Sing" communicates the excitement of the Big Band era.

Shannon Zuchowski, an elementary education major, presents a lyrical work for five dancers, "Wounded," communicating the idea of trying to reach out for help but not knowing where to turn.

Concert tickets are $8 adults, $6 seniors (62 and over) and teens, and free to youth under 12. Tickets are sold at the door and also at the Guerrieri University Center Information Desk (410-543-6006). Three raffle drawings will be held with proceeds to benefit the Dance Company.
