Joseph Hardiman, Former President/CEO NASDAQ Lectures March 31 at SSU

SALISBURY, MD--Joseph Hardiman, former president and chief executive officer of the National Association of Securities Dealers Inc. (NASD) and its wholly owned subsidiary, Nasdaq Stock Market Inc., discusses "Financial Services in the New Millennium" on Wednesday, March 31, at 7 p.m. at Salisbury State University.

Free and open to the public, Hardimanâs talk is in the Great Hall in Holloway Hall on the SSU campus.

As president and CEO from September 1987 through January 1997 Hardiman led Nasdaq as it became the premier market for global growth companies. Nasdaq advanced from the sixth to the second largest equity market in the world as measured by dollar volume of trading. Daily volume of trading increased from 130 million shares to more than 550 million shares and market value of shares traded grew from $350 billion of more than $1.5 trillion.

Under his leadership Nasdaq adapted corporate governance requirements and increased listing standards for all Nasdaq National Market companies, improving protection for investors and paving the way for parity of treatment under state blue sky laws.

Hardiman also introduced a marketing and customer driven ethic into an organization that traditionally operated in a more bureaucratic mode.

Trained as a lawyer with degrees from the University of Maryland, Hardiman grew up in Salisbury where he graduated from Wicomico High School and played basketball under Coach Sam Seidel. He practiced corporate and securities law in Baltimore from 1963-68 when he joined the securities firm of Robert Garrett & Sons Inc., with whom he was associated as an executive vice president and director until he joined Alex. Brown and Sons in 1975. He became a general partner of Alex. Brown in 1976 and was managing director, chief operating officer and member of the board of directors until September 1987.
