Dr. Jim Welsh Contributes to The ST. James Film Directors Encyclopedia

SALISBURY, MD--English professor Jim Welsh, whose last book was "The Encyclopedia of Novels into Film (facts on File, 1998)," is also a contributor to "The St. James Film Directors Encyclopedia," edited by Village Voice film critic Andrew Sarris and recently published by "Visible Ink Press."

This Encyclopedia, currently available through the Stage & Screen bookclub, covers 200 major directors from the first century of cinema. Welsh wrote the entries for Academy Award-winner Fred Zinnemann, who made High Noon (1952), From Here to Eternity (1953) and A Man for All Seasons (1966), and Baltimoreâs own Barry Levinson, famous for his Baltimore trilogy--Diner (1984), Tin Men (1987) and Avalon (1990), as well as the highly regarded television series Homicide.

Welsh is now working on the revised and expanded paperback edition of "The Encyclopedia of Novels into Film," scheduled for publication from Facts on File in September of 1999, and on "The Cinema of Tony Richardson: Essays and Interviews," to be published by the State University of New York Press in August 1999. He also edits the international journal "Literature/Film Quarterly," published at Salisbury State and now in its 27th year.
