Maryland Food Bank Teams with SU Student Food Pantry for Campaign Kickoff

Non-perishable foodSALISBURY, MD---As part of its 40-week campaign marking 40 years of leading the fight against hunger in the state, the Maryland Food Bank (MFB) will team up with Salisbury University’s Food for the Flock Food Pantry to kick off the food bank’s “It Takes More Than Food to End Hunger” campaign on the Eastern Shore on Thursday, April 11, on Henson Hall Lawn at Salisbury University.

This festive event will include the formal introduction of Perdue Farms Chairman Jim Perdue and his wife, Jan Perdue, as two of the statewide campaign’s honorary chairs. In recognition of their long-term partnership with the food bank, the Perdue family will also expand its support with a lead gift to mark this milestone anniversary.

During the event, MFB will bring attention to the increasing reality of hunger on college campuses while highlighting the innovative ways the food bank works with community partners like SU to provide access to food. In addition, the food bank will provide shelf-stable foods to members of the SU community, and students from MFB’s culinary training program, FoodWorks, will offer food tastings and demonstrations. The food bank’s SNAP Outreach team will also be in attendance, as well as various university resources that provide services for students.

An estimated 42,000 residents are food insecure on the Eastern Shore, a region in which the Maryland Food Bank – Eastern Shore branch distributed enough food to provide more than 5 million meals last year. This event is the second food distribution coordinated by MFB to celebrate its 40-year history of feeding hungry individuals while recognizing different partners that have helped sustain Maryland’s food assistance safety net over that time. Throughout March and April, the food bank will travel across the state to host similar events in Baltimore and western Maryland.
