'Caste in India and the US' Zoom Session Open to Public
SALISBURY, MD--- The Psychology departments at Salisbury University and India’s Pandit Deendayal Petroleum University (PDPU) work in concert this January for a course centered on discussion of the book Caste: The Origin of our Discontents.
The public is invited to attend the opening Zoom panel session 8:30-10 a.m. Monday, January 4 that inaugurates the course.
SU panelists include President Dr. Charles Wight, Provost and Senior Vice President of Academic Affairs Dr. Karen Olmstead, and Dean of the Fulton School of Liberal Arts Dr. Maarten Pereboom. PDPU panelists in Gandhinagar, India are Director General Professor S. Sundar Manoharan, Director of the School of Liberal Studies Professor Nigam Dave, and Dean of the School of Liberal Studies Dr. Ritu Sharma.
“This cross-cultural collaboration is a tremendous opportunity for SU, the community, and students enrolled in the course,” said SU Fulton School Dean Dr. Maarten Pereboom. “Being able to offer the public access to the opening and closing sessions allows many more people to share in this important partnership.”
The Psychology 490 course, Caste in India and the US, will examine the groundbreaking book which looks at U.S.-based race relations and racism as a hierarchical caste system. The book is a New York Times bestseller and Oprah Book Club pick, written by Isabel Wilkerson, winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Feature Writing and the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Literature.
The one-credit course for SU students runs January 4-22 and is taught by Psychology professors Drs. Michele Schlehofer and Rachel Steele. A closing discussion 8:30-10 a.m. Monday, January 22, also is open to the public.
