Byrnes Receives CPS Instructor Certification"
SALISBURY, MD--F. Christian Byrnes Jr., Regional Safe Communities director at Salisbury University, was recently certified as a Child Passenger Safety (CPS) Instructor, making him one of four instructors for the entire Eastern Shore.
The CPS course is a 32-hour standardized course from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) that teaches how to correctly install child restraints in vehicles. According to an NHTSA 1996 study, “between 85 and 95 percent of all child restraints are incorrectly installed/used.”
Instructors must be certified technicians for at least six months, have two to four letters of recommendation, help teach the 32-hour course and have evaluations by at least two other instructors.
The certification allows Byrnes to conduct more training classes on the Eastern Shore, in an effort to reduce the misuse rate of child safety seats and increase participation in voluntary check-up events.
Currently, Byrnes has a class scheduled for October. For additional information concerning this and future classes call 410-543-6309. To read the full release, visit Salisbury's home page www.salisbury.edu.
