Campus Habitat Chapter Dedicates First House May 5" 

SALISBURY, MD---After $40,000 worth of supplies and several months of labor from some 600 volunteers, an Eastern Shore family moves into their first home Saturday, May 5, at 11:30 a.m. in Kirkwood Estates.

Volunteers from Salisbury State University’s chapter of Habitat for Humanity, who constructed the house, will lead a dedication ceremony and serve a light lunch. 

“By providing a house, a person can affect many aspects of someone’s life such as self-esteem,” said Kevin Seidel, former president for SSU’s chapter. 

The campus habitat chapter has constructed four houses since 1994 and has assisted in projects throughout the Lower Shore. Volunteers and the future homeowners are required to donate their time to the construction efforts.

“It’s not the case that the future homeowners get the house for free,” Seidel said. “Habitat helps people help themselves.”

Seidel said the help comes from staff, faculty and numerous campus groups including the German Club residence halls.

Seidel said the students do most of their work on Fridays and Saturdays.

The Seagull Century, SSU’s annual bike ride that attracts thousands of riders from across the nation, donated $12,423 to the charity last year and more than $18,000 in 1999. The rest of the money came from the organization’s affiliates.
