Donald Whaley receives Faculty Appreciation Award

SALISBURY, MD ---Salisbury University's Alumni Association recently presented Donald Whaley, associate professor and coordinator of American studies in the Fulton School of Liberal Arts, with its Faculty Appreciation Award during Fall Convocation ceremonies. One faculty member in each of SU's four schools received the award.

Whaley has taught at SU since 1975. He holds a master's in history from Princeton University, and a bachelor's in philosophy and history from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. A widely-published author, Whaley specializes in history of the South, 19th century America and social/cultural history. His work on film director Oliver Stone has received critical acclaim, and is included in the Encyclopedia of Filmmakers as well as a forthcoming book from University of Kentucky Press. A contributing editor of the Literature/Film Quarterly, Whaley is also vice president of the Literature/Film Association.

One former student wrote of Whaley, "I have tried to pattern my teaching style after his, but I'm afraid it has been a pale imitation."

Each school's selection committee consisted of last year's award recipients, one other faculty member chosen by the dean, and three alumni from that school, each having different majors, backgrounds and experiences. Nominated professors must have taught full-time 10 or more years at SU, and must have made lasting and significant contributions to their graduates' lives.

Alumni Relations Director Roy Perdue said, "We feel this is one of the highest honors a faculty member can receive-one coming their former students. We are proud that the University's high standards in the classroom have a lasting effect on our alumni."
