'Experience the Sound' at SU December 2-11

SALISBURY, MD---Salisbury University invites the community to celebrate the season with its “Experience the Sound” holiday music festival December 2-11. “The name ‘Experience the Sound’ represents our wish for audience members to experience firsthand live performances of our University ensembles,” said Lawrence Knier, who conducts the Salisbury Symphony Orchestra at SU as part of the series. “Listening to a live performance is an active experience.” According to Dr. Linda Cockey, chair of the Department of Music, “Ensembles at SU always add magic to the holidays. With pieces ranging from classical to seasonal favorites, audiences have a chance to experience a wide spectrum of music from traditional to the new.” The series begins 7:30 p.m. Thursday, December 2, in the Wicomico Room of the Guerrieri University Center with the SU Jazz Ensemble, conducted by Dr. Jerry Tabor. The performance features 11 student and community musicians and lots of Latin, bebop, hard bop and cool style jazz. The Chorale and Chamber Choir, conducted by Dr. William Folger, continues the series 4:30 p.m. Sunday, December 5, in Holloway Hall Auditorium with a tribute to music and the holidays. Selections include “Pavane” by Gabriel Fauré, “Jubilate” by Benjamin Britten, “The Road Not Taken” by Randall Thompson, “O Magnum Mysterium” by Thomas Luis de Victoria, “Cantate Domino” by Heinrich Schütz, “The Holy and the Ivy” arranged by John Rutter, “Gloucestershire Wassail” arranged by Tom Scott, “Il est bel et bon” by Pierre Passereau and “A Welsh Lullaby” by K. Lee Scott. Featured performers are seniors Danielle Carboni and SungEun “Sunny” Kim, and juniors Andrea Hurley and Andrew Ackerman. The Wind Ensemble, directed by Knier, entertains audiences 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, December 7, in Holloway Hall Auditorium with both a celebration of the holidays and a tribute to America’s soldiers. Selections include Second Suite for Military Band in F by Gustav Holst, “American Patrol” by F.W. Meacham, traditional Spanish carol “Fum, Fum, Fum” arranged by Ken Dye, “It Came Upon the Midnight Clear” with setting by Morton Gould, “March of the Toys” and “Toyland” from Babes in Toyland by Victor Herbert, “Sleigh Ride” and “A Christmas Festival” by Leroy Anderson, “Christmas in Poland” by Vaclav Nelhybel and “Once in Royal David’s City” by Henry Bauntlett, arranged by Philip Sparke. The SSO concludes this year’s series 8 p.m. Saturday, December 11, in Holloway Hall Auditorium, putting a new spin on the classic Clement Moore poem The Night Before Christmas with a musical recitation by Dr. Timothy O’Rourke, dean of the Charles R. and Martha N. Fulton School of Liberal Arts. Other selections include “Waltz of the Flowers” from The Nutcracker Suite by Tchaikovsky featuring student harpist Jessica Whalen, “Adeste Fidelis,” Anderson’s “Sleigh Ride,” “Egmont Overture” by Beethoven, “Christmas Day” by Gustav Holst (performed in conjunction with the Chorale and Chamber Choir), “Hatikvah-The Hope” (based on the Israeli National anthem) and “Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring” by Bach.
