Foreign Language Week Celebrated with Dinner, Films

SALISBURY, MD---Salisbury University’s Department of Modern Languages and Intercultural Studies celebrates National Foreign Language Week March 2-8 with activities emphasizing the importance of knowing a second language and culture in today’s global society.

On Tuesday, March 4, from 5-7 p.m. in the Bistro in the Commons there will be a Mardi Gras dinner free to students with meal cards and $8.75 to the general public. At 7 p.m., there will be a free showing of the film La Ciudad in the Honors House located on the corner of Camden Avenue and Loblolly Lane.

This Spanish movie with English subtitles is a story of four people struggling to build their lives after arriving in New York City as immigrants. Filmmaker David Riker offers a sensitive portrayal of loss, love, frustration and hope as he gives a closer look at today’s new Americans.

The French language film Amélie with English subtitles will be shown free of charge Wednesday, March 5, at 7 p.m. in the Pocomoke Room of the Guerrieri University Center. Nominated for five Academy Awards, Amélie is the story of a shy waitress in a Paris café who makes a surprising discovery which changes her life and those of many others.

On Friday, March 7 at 4:30 p.m., La Société Française meets at Adam’s Ribs in Fruitland. Sponsored by the Department of Modern Languages and Intercultural Studies, La Société Française is comprised of students and people in the community who get together monthly to converse in French.
