SALISBURY, MD---Learning and fun go hand-in-hand at Salisbury University during Fun Day 2006 – Explore SU Saturday, September 16.

From 11 a.m.-3 p.m., this family festival and celebration of learning features everything from glass blowing to chemistry professors making ice cream—with liquid nitrogen!

“We have activities everyone can enjoy, from storytelling to musical performances,” said Derek Tennant, Fun Day coordinator.

Looking to discover new culture? Be sure to see the Wong Chinese Lion Dancers at 1 p.m. The Wongs are the lead dancers at the annual Chinese New Year Parade in Washington, D.C. For those more scientifically inclined, the SU Nursing Department allows families a look at what it takes to train in the medical field with SimMan, a robotic patient simulator.

The festival is centered on the “Fun Day Green”—the expanse of lawn between Maggs Physical Activities Center, Henson Science Hall, Caruthers Hall and the Rt. 13 parking lot.  In between will be inflatables such as a Moon Bounce and Obstacle Course for youngsters, arts and crafts such as duck carving with child-safe tools sponsored by the Ward Museum, games and free give-aways, candy and SU tattoos, a chance to be photographed with SU’s Sammy the Sea Gull, 5-cent philosophical advice (á la Peanuts) from the Philosophy Department and much more!

A hayride provides tours of the campus and drops people off at Fulton Hall, and other stops where families may enjoy more crafts, exhibits, demonstrations such as glass blowing, computer fun and real robots, courtesy of NASA.  Bring sneakers so you can play with the “big kids” during sports clinics with the field hockey, women’s lacrosse, men’s basketball and cheerleading teams.

Off-campus groups also participate. The Salisbury Zoo brings its Zoo-2-U Program, allowing youngsters and brave-of-heart of all ages to interact with animals. Delmarva Broadcasting provides treats and tunes with its free ice cream truck, a returning favorite from previous years.

All events are free and the public is invited. For more information call 410-543-6324 or visit the SU Web site at www.salisbury.edu.
