Laila, Kavthekar Continue India Series With SU Performance Sept. 30

SALISBURY, MD---The unique sounds of the sitar, coupled with the taut percussion of the tabla, fill Salisbury University’s Holloway Hall Auditorium as musicians Alif Laila and Amit Kavthekar perform 7 p.m. Thursday, September 30.

The presentation is part of SU’s “India and the Sub-Continent” fall cultural events series.

Laila has studied classical Indian music since she was a child, growing up in Bangladesh. She has performed worldwide at venues including the Smithsonian Institution, New York City’s Rubin Museum and The National Museum of Bangladesh. She has recorded with renowned world musicians, including Pandit Anindo Chatterjee and Ustad Taari Khan. She also has released two performance DVDs, Hridayaragam and Strings of Resonance, and an album, The Romance of Raags and Songs of Bengal.

Kavthekar, on faculty at the New England School of Music, also began his instrumental studies at an early age, receiving lessons from famed tabla player Ustad Allarakha starting when he was 6-years-old. He has since played with and studied under a number of popular world music percussionists, including Ustad Zakir Hussain, Shri Ashok Godgole and the late Deepak Nerurkar.
