Melissa Ferrick Performance Monday, October 8
SALISBURY, MD--Melissa Ferrick, who has toured, promoted and released five critically acclaimed albums during the last decade, performs in concert at Salisbury University on Monday, October 8, at 8 p.m. in Holloway Hall Auditorium.
Ferrick, who emerged in 1994 as part of a group of new female “alternative” singer/songwriters, has been the recipient of the Boston Music Award for Best Singer/Songwriter and a finalist for Best Female Vocalist and Best Indie Song for her 2000 release “Freedom.” In addition, she has won the Boston Music Award for Outstanding Female Singer-Songwriter (2000) and Best Folk Rock Band (1999) and her album “Everything I Need” was nominated for Album of the Year by the 1999 Gay and Lesbian American Music Association.
Having dropped out of Berkeley College of Music in the mid-1980s, Ferrick’s career began singing in coffeehouses ending up in Boston. Her major breakthrough came when she became the opening act for Morrissey, which earned her a small cult following and a recording contract.
Ferrick, who draws her music from her own personal experiences, is currently touring with her drummer Brian Winton. “The addition of drums has allowed me to come into my own even more,” said Ferrick. “With Brian creating the rhythms that always haunted my head, I am now free to embrace my own words and guitar playing in a way that I wasn't before.”
The performance, free to SU students with valid ID and $5 for non-SU students, is sponsored by SU’s BT GLASS (Bisexual, Transgendered, Gay, Lesbian and Straight Support) and is in recognition of National Coming Out Day.
