SSU Name Change Bill Signed by Gov. Glendening
SALISBURY, MD---Salisbury State University’s name change becomes official today when Governor Parris Glendening signs into law the SSU name change bill (HB438) during a ceremony at the State House in Annapolis. The name change goes into effect at the start of the fiscal year, July 1.
This is the fourth name change of the University since its inception in 1925. Previous names were:
1925: Maryland State Normal School at Salisbury 1934: Maryland State Teachers College at Salisbury 1963: Salisbury State College 1988: Salisbury State University 2001: Salisbury University. The name change comes two years after “state” was dropped from Towson University. Regionally, universities in New Jersey and Pennsylvania have also dropped state from their names. Officials believe the change will benefit graduating students as well as enhance fund- raising efforts. For more information contact the SSU Public Relations Office at 410-543-6030.
