SU Celebrates '80s on Our 80th Spring Cultural Events Series

SALISBURY, MD---From Rubik’s Cubes to jelly shoes, the ‘80s was a decade defined by popular culture. Salisbury University brings back the years of DeLoreans, Devo and Duran Duran during its “’80s on Our 80th” spring cultural events series, celebrating the University’s 80th anniversary.

Events begin this month with the John Hughes Film Festival, celebrating one of the decade’s most prolific movie writers, directors and producers. Shown 7 p.m. Mondays in Caruthers Hall Auditorium, the lineup includes Sixteen Candles on February 27, The Breakfast Club on February 27, Pretty in Pink on March 6 and Ferris Bueller’s Day Off on March 13.

The series opens itself to world leadership when Lech Walesa, the first democratically elected president of Poland, speaks 7 p.m. Thursday, March 30. The location will be announced. The leader of the Lenin Shipyard strike in Gdansk that formed the foundation of the Solidarity party that led to the end of communism in Poland, Walesa earned the Nobel Peace Prize in 1983. His appearance also is part of SU’s One Person Can Make a Difference Lecture Series.

Admission to his talk is free, but tickets are required. Students, faculty and staff may pick up tickets at the Guerrieri University Center Information Desk starting Monday, February 20. Remaining tickets will be made available to the general public starting Wednesday, March 1.

The event is sponsored by the Community Foundation of the Eastern Shore and the SU Center for Conflict Resolution, Charles R. and Martha N. Fulton School of Liberal Arts, Office of Cultural Affairs, Student Government Association, Office of the Provost and Center for International Education.

Festivities continue from 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, April 19, when University Dining Services and the Office of Cultural Affairs host a “Food Trends of the ‘80s” dinner in the Bistro of the Commons. The menu includes fusion dishes such as Buffalo shepherd’s pie, along with fun deserts including dirt cake. Cost of the meal is $8.95, $5.50 for children 6-12. Children 5 and under dine free.

The aptly named band The Reagan Years culminates the series with a performance 7 p.m. Friday, April 21, in Holloway Hall Auditorium. The band transports listeners back to the early days of MTV with songs originally recorded by artists from Bruce Springsteen to the Bangles. Admission to all events is free unless otherwise noted.
