SU Faculty Give Voice to International Authors Reading Series

SALISBURY, MD---Salisbury University continues its Year of Languages celebration with the Great International Authors Reading Series. All readings are 7 p.m. in the Fireside Lounge of the Guerrieri University Center.

Dr. Keith Brower of SU’s Modern Languages Department inaugurates the series with a reading of excerpts from Miguel de Cervantes’ Don Quixote on Tuesday, October 4. Cervantes published the novel in two parts in 1605 and 1615, ostensibly as a parody of romantic books of chivalry popular in Spain at the time. Readers, however, saw the comical antics of the title character, a common man who sought knighthood, more enjoyable than the author expected. Much to his surprise, it became a best-seller throughout Europe and remains popular today. Many consider it the first modern novel.

Dr. Gerry St. Martin of the Mondern Languages Department continues the series with La Grande Bret?che by Honor? de Balzac on Tuesday, October 11. The famous 19th century French author and journalist, considered one of the founders of realism in literature, published more than 90 novels and novelettes, combining them into a representation of the whole of society. Many of these works were collected in his most renowned piece, The Human Comedy.
