SU Hosts Disability Awareness Month Series
SALISBURY, MD---In honor of Student Disability Awareness Month this April, Salisbury University hosts a series of events from workshops to film showings.
On Friday, April 4, an online tool is offered with a workshop following to explain the results. “StrengthsQuest: Building Upon Your Personal Best!” helps students understand how to apply their results for maximizing success in academics, life-long learning, leadership and relationships. Three brown bag lunch discussions are being held throughout the month. The first, on Tuesday, April 8, is Understanding the Impacts of Psychological Disabilities Inside and Outside of the Classroom. Hosted by Dr. Kathleen Scott, director of Student Counseling Services, the event is in Nanticoke Room A of the Guerrieri University Center from noon-1 p.m.
My Left Foot, starring Daniel Day-Lewis, is shown Wednesday, April 9, from 6-9 p.m. in Henson Science Hall Room 211. The film tells the story of Christy Brown, an accomplished painter, poet and author, who was born with cerebral palsy and was misdiagnosed as having mental disabilities throughout the first 10 years of his life. Pizza and drinks will be served.
On Thursday, April 15, from 6-7 p.m., in the Guerrieri University Center the Assistive Technology Workshop provides a sophisticated, user-friendly technology that offers students reading, writing and study solutions to learning challenges. Though the program was originally made for students with disabilities it may also help those looking for new ways of learning.
A Look at Temporary Disabilities is the next brown bag lunch, held Friday, April 18. This lunch is hosted by Jennifer Berkman, director of Student Health Services, and is in the Pocomoke Room of the Guerrieri University Center from noon-1 p.m.
The final brown bag lunch is An Introduction to the Office of Student Disability Support Services. Held Tuesday, April 22, from noon-1 p.m., Nikki Dyer, coordinator of Student Disability Support Services hosts the event in the Pocomoke Room of the Guerrieri University Center.
A student panel discusses "Can You Walk (or Roll) a Mile in Their Shoes?" from 6:30-7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 29, in the Pocomoke Room of the Guerrieri University Center. Panel members, some with disabilities and some without, discuss their personal experiences with understanding themselves and others with disabilities.
Disability Awareness Month activities culminate with a screening of What’s Eating Gilbert Grape starring Johnny Depp and Leonardo DiCaprio, 6-9 p.m. Tuesday, April 30, in Henson Science Hall Room 211. The film shows how a family strives to exist while dealing with the impacts of poverty, death and physical and developmental disabilities. Pizza will be served.
