SU Student Leader Joins Former President Clinton at Event

SALISBURY, MD---A former U.S. president and a current Salisbury University student recently joined thousands of political supporters during a Democratic National Convention fundraiser in Washington, D.C.

As Bill Clinton keynoted the event, SU senior Darren Jackson stood among thousands of supporters, high-profile entertainers and elected officials, rallying for the Democratic Party.

Organizers of the event at the D.C. Dream dance club hand-selected Darren Jackson to serve as a registration assistant due to his high visibility as a community volunteer in the District, work with the NAACP and service on the Maryland Higher Education Commission’s Student Advisory Council.

Many guests at the fundraiser, including members of the hip hop band Outkast, singer Ginuwine and BET television personalities Boris Kodjoe and Nicole Ari Parker, were geared toward a younger crowd.

“Instead of going for the 45-and-up populace for the next election, they decided to go for the 45-and-under populace to encourage them to vote,” Jackson said.

Since the Washington fundraiser, Jackson has been invited to participate in other Democratic National Convention events in other parts of the country. While his classes preclude him from accepting every invitation, Jackson said he plans to volunteer at a number of political events through the 2004 election.
