Salisbury Symphony Orchestra performs February 1

SALISBURY, MD ----The Salisbury Symphony Orchestra performs Saturday, February 1, at 8 p.m. in Holloway Hall Auditorium.

The orchestra performs The Barber of Seville Overture by Gioacchino Rossini; Rodrigo's Concierto de Aranjez with featured classical guitar soloist and SU adjunct professor, Lars Helgert; and Copland's musical landscape, Down a Country Lane.

The SSO, under the direction of conductor Thomas Elliot, boasts 63 members, some who travel up to three hours for rehearsals and performances. Founded in 1986, the orchestra will also perform Ralph Vaughn William's Sea Songs, a short march-like tune, reflecting folk tunes from English sea ports. Concerto in D Major by C.P.E. Bach features two members on oboe, Julie Barton and John O'Meara.

Mozart's Trauermusik is offered in memory of three charter members lost this past year: Kenner Lyons, Evan Wolcott and Cecil Yates. A hauntingly beautiful piece, it was written as "funeral music" by Mozart to honor several of his fellow Masons.

Tickets are sold through Salisbury Wicomico Arts Council outlets (Peninsula Bank and Bank of Delmarva branches) and at the door. Admission is $15 for adults and $10 for seniors (60 and over) and children (18 and under). For information call 410-548-5587 or visit the SU Web site at www.salisbury.edu.
