Senator Paul S. Sarbanes inaugurates lecture series Oct. 22

SALISBURY, MD ---Amid growing evidence of student dissatisfaction with politics and low voter turnout, Salisbury University will inaugurate on Tuesday, October 22, a unique Maryland initiative: "The Paul S. Sarbanes Lecture Series" that will bring to its campus some of the most prominent and influential public figures in the country.

This new program, a cooperative endeavor between U.S. Senator Sarbanes and the University's Institute for Public Affairs and Civic Engagement(PACE), will seek to counter the often stereotyped images young people have about politics and politicians. "We want students, and the community, to have an opportunity to meet some of the people who create today's headlines," said Harry Basehart, co-director of PACE, "and we think that they will be surprised at the depth of insight and the level of commitment of our very best public servants."

The yearly series will be kicked off by a special lecture by Senator Sarbanes himself on October 22, with a spring lecture to follow by a distinguished public official. "We are delighted to announce a lecture series of this quality," said SU President Janet Dudley-Eshbach. "Special thanks to the Senator and his staff for honoring his hometown and this University with this unprecedented series."

The Senator will address the campus community at 7 p.m. in the Wicomico Room of the Guerrieri University Center. In his talk, "The Crisis in Corporate America: The Legislative Response," Senator Sarbanes will discuss the genesis and process, the delicate balance, of creating the most far-reaching reform of business practices in the last six decades.

The lecture is free and the public is cordially invited. For more information call 410-543-6030 or visit the SU Web site at www.salisbury.edu.
