Senkbeil receives Faculty Appreciation Award

SALISBURY, MD ---Salisbury University's Alumni Association recently presented Dr. Edward Senkbeil, professor of chemistry in the Henson School of Science and Technology, with its Faculty Appreciation Award during Fall Convocation ceremonies. One faculty member in each of SU's four schools received the award.

Senkbeil, who earned his bachelor's degree in chemistry from SU in 1974, has taught at the University since 1980. He received both his master's and doctoral degrees in chemistry/biochemistry from the University of Delaware.

Senkbeil developed and implemented the popular biochemistry track for chemistry majors who are interested in biological applications. The biochemistry lab experiments he created for SU undergraduates have been published in the Journal of Chemical of Education.

In addition to chemistry and biochemistry, he has for the past 15 years taught a laboratory safety course, making the University one of the few in the country that offer such training. Senkbeil's research on laboratory safety demonstrations has also been presented nationally at chemical education workshops and conferences.

One of Senkbeil's former students, now at the top of her class in graduate school, wrote of him, "I have him to thank for all my success. He is a dedicated professor who has an extraordinary ability to clearly convey complex information."

Each school's selection committee consisted of last year's award recipients, one other faculty member chosen by the dean, and three alumni from that school, each having different majors, backgrounds and experiences. Nominated professors must have taught full-time 10 or more years at SU, and must have made lasting and significant contributions to their graduates' lives.

Alumni Relations Director Roy Perdue said, "We feel this is one of the highest honors a faculty member can receive-one coming from their former students. We are proud that the University's high standards in the classroom have a lasting effect on our alumni."
