Small Leads Book Discussion at Barnes & Noble March 9

SALISBURY, MD---Dr. Clara Small, a professor of history in Salisbury University’s Charles R. and Martha N. Fulton School of Liberal Arts, leads the discussion on the book Warriors Don’t Cry by Melba Pattillo Beals 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 9, at Barnes & Noble Booksellers in Salisbury. Pattillo is a member of the Little Rock Nine, the first African-American students allowed to attend Central High School in Little Rock, AK, following the U.S. Supreme Court’s 1954 decision against segregation. The book recalls the tumultuous experience, which included soldiers having to be assigned to protect each African-American student at the school. A popular local speaker on African-American history, Small keynoted the Civil War Lecture Series at Emory and Henry College in Emory, VA, earlier this year, presenting the lecture “A Black Southern Woman Looks at the Man’s War,” addressing several questions regarding that perspective in both historical and contemporary contexts. She is the author of Reality Check: Brief Biographies of African-Americans on Maryland’s and Delaware’s Eastern Shore. The discussion is free and the public is cordially invited.
