Great Leader Lecture, March 9: Douglas Becker, Co-CEO Sylvan Learning Center

SALISBURY, MD--Douglas L. Becker, president and co-chief executive officer of Sylvan Learning Systems Inc., is the featured speaker in the spring Great Leader Lecture series sponsored by Salisbury State Universityâs Franklin P. Perdue School of Business. Beckerâs presentation, free and open to the public, is on Tuesday March 9, at 3:30 p.m. in the Wicomico Room of SSUâs Guerrieri University Center.

Sylvan Learning Systems Inc. is a global provider of educational services to families, schools and industry. It has nearly 3,000 learning, training and testing centers in more than 100 countries throughout the world and is the largest private sector education services firm. It provides supplemental education services to students of all skill levels--helping students raise their grades and self-esteem through personalized instructional programs.

Along with co-CEO Chris Hoehn-Saric, Becker was named Marylandâs Entrepreneur of the Year in 1995. Since Sylvanâs merger in February 1991 with KEE Systems, an educational technology firm, Becker has served as Sylvanâs president. Prior to the merger, he served as executive vice president of Kee Systems since 1987. Becker is also a founder of and principal in Sterling Capital Ltd, a diversified investment company and a major shareholder in Sylvan and KEE Systems.

Becker is a trustee or director of Baltimore Gas and Electric Company, the Baltimore Museum of Art, Washington College, Baltimore Reads Inc., the Enoch Pratt Free Library System, the University of Maryland Foundation and Empower Baltimore. Additionally, he is chairman of Port Discovery--the Baltimore Childrenâs Museums, a $30 million project developing a world-class educational attraction in Baltimoreâs Inner Harbor.
