Culver Wins Maryland State Arts Council Award

SALISBURY, MD---Richard Culver, Salisbury State University  media relations director, has received an Individual Artist Award in play writing from the Maryland State Arts Council for 2001.

The award, which includes a $1,000 grant, is for the play, "The Annunciation of Sarah," based on the Mary Wilkins Freeman short story, "The Revolt of Mother."  An earlier version of the script titled "Welcome to Freeman" was workshopped at SSU last year.  The cast included faculty Dean Defino and Karen Rayne; students John Moller, Allison Davis and Andy Levin; and community residents Kelley Rouse and Don Atkinson.

"Theatre is a collaborative medium and I'm particularly grateful to the cast and the Bobbi Biron Theatre Program, the English and Philosophy departments, and the Salisbury Wicomico Arts Council for their invaluable contributions," said Culver.

A member of the BMI Lehman Engel Musical Theatre Workshop in New York, Culver originally wrote the script as a libretto for a musical.  "I'll use the grant for that next step of development," he said.
