Julliard Series - Remus Azoitei (violinist)

SALISBURY, MD-- Romanian violinist Remus Azoitei and pianist Nicola Eimer return, by popular request, to Salisbury University on Wednesday, April 3, at 7 p.m. in the Great Hall of Holloway Hall. Part of the University's Juilliard Concert Series, admission is free and the public is cordially invited.

Azoitei first delighted a Salisbury audience in April 2000, with a performance on a rare Stradivarius violin crafted in 1694, said June Krell-Salgado, SU cultural affairs coordinator. He returned last winter with pianist Nicola Eimer, a Fulbright Scholarship recipient earning her master's at the Juilliard School. Following their visit to SU, they will perform at a prestigious concert at the Chester Historical Society in Connecticut on April 7.

Azoitei, who earned his master's degree at Juilliard, holds a full scholarship as a doctoral student at the Royal Academy of Music in London. He made his New York debut at CAMI Hall in June 1997, after winning the Eugene Sarbu Scholarship Award in Bucharest, Romania. He was presented by the Romanian Cultural Center in New York as the leader of the new generation of Romanian violinists.

He has won many national and international competitions since the age of 6, when he received the Outstanding Young Performers Prize at the Ciprian Porumbescu National Competition. In addition to first prize and the special prize at Jeunnesses Musicales International Violin Competition, he has received top prizes at Germany's Wolfgang Marschner and Kloster Schontal International.

An active chamber musician, Eimer began her studies in London at the Royal Academy of Music. She has given concerto performances at the Wigmore Hall and the Barbican. Her solo recitals include the Polish Institute, Garrick Club, Steinway Hall and St. James' Piccadilly. She receives generous support from the Countess of Munster Musical Trust.

The Eimer Piano Trio was formed five years ago and has played in venues including Fairfield Hall and St. Martin-in-the Fields. After winning the Tillet Trust Young Artists Platform Competition, they gave their Wigmore Hall debut concert.

The Office of Cultural Affairs and Museum Programs sponsors the performance. For information call 410-543-6271 or visit the SU Web site at www.salisbury.edu.
