Professional Development workshop

SALISBURY, MD-- Salisbury University's Department of Psychology and Center for Professional Development provide a three-part series of professional workshops, "Trauma, Loss and Grief: Responding to the Times," beginning March 15 with the first workshop, "Learning from the Lessons of Survivors," presented by Dr. Mary Beth Williams.

Upcoming in the series are "Grief and Bereavement: Perspectives and Techniques for Loss Support," presented by Dr. Ellen Zinner on April 26, and "Confronting Traumatic Losses: Adolescents and Youth," presented by Dr. Terry Martin on June 7.

Held in the Wicomico Room of the Guerrieri University Center, all workshops begin at 8:30 a.m. with a continental breakfast and end at 4:30 p.m. Lunch is not provided.

Williams' workshop introduces participants to the world of trauma survivors-their symptoms, experiences and possible healing. Although not everyone who experiences a traumatic event suffers long-term consequences, if only 10 percent of those who experienced or witnessed the events of September 11 develop post-traumatic stress reactions or disorders, the mental health resources qualified to treat trauma will be overwhelmed. Thus, learning ways to take care of survivors within the trauma framework has become invaluable to the mental health profession.

Williams, Ph.D., a traumatologist and counselor in private practice in Warrenton, VA, has written numerous chapters, articles and books on trauma. Since September 11 she has assisted various organizations and agencies in responding to trauma.

Information on the second and third workshops in the series is forthcoming. Call Kathryn Redden at 410-543-6394 or Carol Brady at 410-548-4481 with any questions, or visit the SU Web site at www.salisbury.edu.
