Salisbury Chorale Performs Brahms, Britten November 7
Thursday October 21, 2004
SALISBURY, MD---Waltzes by Johannes Brahms and a collection of holiday works by Benjamin Britten highlight the Salisbury Chorale fall concert. The 25 member chorale, composed of both community and university singers, performs at 4:30 p.m. Sunday, November 7, in Holloway Hall. The performance is free and the public is invited. A few selected pieces are from the Neue Liebeslieder-Walzer, Opus 65, by Brahms. A set of 15 waltzes, Neue Liebeslieder translates roughly to “New Love Songs.” Sample pieces the chorale is performing are Finstere Schatten der Nacht (“Dark shadows of the night”) and Flammenauge, dunkles Haar (“Burning eyes, jet-black hair”). The waltzes are with four-hand piano accompaniment by Dr. Linda Cockey, Department of Music chair, and Susan Zimmer, staff accompanist. The chorale also performs A Ceremony of Carols by Benjamin Britten, a British composer who is best known for his War Requiem. A Ceremony of Carols is a Christmas collection of Medieval carols with texts by gospel writers including Robert Southwell and William Cornish. A Ceremony of Carols is in the format of "Lessons and Carols," which originated in England. It was originally composed for treble voices (all women or boy sopranos and altos) and is accompanied by harp. For more information call 410-543-6385 or visit the SU Web site www.salisbury.edu.
